I spent a career doing television news / sports photography. I was a buyer for the last television station I worked for so I do understand your dilemma. I also, even though I’m retired, still so some pro work with my Rebel XS.

That said I always planned ahead for my equipment as in "do I really need to upgrade if my current gear is doing the job?" "Do I really want to wait for that new, high dollar piece of gear if what’s currently available will do the job better than what I have?" And, as always, "do my current finances allow me to invest today, do I need more work first?, or do my clients, and potential clients, actually know the difference between what I have and what I want?"

Do the folks I work for know the difference? No. In my bag I carry a Fuji 9000, a point and shoot that does almost everything my Rebel does. When I pull it out, folks who don’t know cameras, are always impressed because it looks like an expensive camera. It does a good job but it’s not an SLR. When I pull out my XS, and they haven’t seen the Fuji, they’re just as impressed.

So, the real question is, do you really need this new gear?… or do you just "think" you need this new gear? Only you can answer that question.

I hope I’ve helped a little. If you want to discuss further you can reach me through my profile.

Good Luck, Jim

If you’re a "professional ", buy a D3. The D90 isn’t a professional camera either. You realize to be able to call yourself a pro, photography has to be your job income.

Depending on what upgraded lenses you are using, if they are DX they will NOT work on the d700 body, due to its larger sensor. However the d300s offers the same thing as the d700, and the d90 is basicly a smaller d300s. So my best bet is go to a camera store and try out the d300 and/or the d90.

Excuse my bad language, but the d90 is a cameragasm, i have it, and it is amazing. Phenominal quality and usibility

If there’s something you want to do and honestly can’t with the D40 then an upgrade would be a good investment. If you feel like you are inadequate then no it is not a good investment, it is just advertising doing it’s job. The D40 is on the lower end, meaning it sacrifices some things so that it can be sold for less. That said; it is still a fine camera.

P.S. I’m a senior in a neurology program and I’m a planing on applying this to advertising. I have not seen a commercial in 3 years with the exception of a eyelash grower medicine when I went to make coffee while watching a youtube; I didn’t get a chance to mute and open a different window. The new trick that scares the crap out of me is they said "inadequate or not enough lashes." Those are the same words!" What they are doing now is they are using a big word to make the people feel stupid then they say it in a way they can understand; not enough. So they set you up to feel inadequate and then tell you that you are to your face. It is such a dirty trick but it works. I’m going on this tangent to say maybe nothing is inadequate but any number of years of the world as it is is making you convince yourself that your camera is.

Long store short, you don’t need to upgrade.

Well, the D90 has the APS-C sized sensor. The D700 is a full frame camera. If you have nice full frame lenses, you should probably wait a while longer until you can afford the D700 as long as the D40 is working and doing what you need it to do. You could even look for one used.

If your lenses are "digital" lenses, then I would say to either get a D90 or a D300/s because you won’t be able to use them on a D700 anyway.

But you should have a second camera because you should always have a back-up when doing professional work. So, yes, you do need another camera, you just may not need a D700.
