what would be the best overall lens for the full frame Nikon D700?
For a full frame D700, the best overall lens to use is the nikon 24mm-120mm VR lens. You have a little extra wide lens coverage in the 24 mm and you have a good telephoto for portraits and some medium distance shots. Obviously, you need to get other zooms and single focal lenght lenses in addition to this but the 24 to 129 vr is a good start.

Since the lens is what makes the picture and since the Nikon 700 is selling for 2,900.00. I'd get a 28 to 135 2.8 Nikon ED lens (if they make it). I'd want a wide aperture for low light shooting and a wide angle to mid telephoto for distance.

I don't know what you like to shoot so I can't really inform you on a best overall lens. I use a $100 used 28-200 f3.5- 5.6 G lens. Here are some images taken with that lens the first 3 pages.
