Thank you!
Well from the first previous awnser i found the Canon 50d….what lens would be good with that if i just bought the bodY?

the 50mm f1.8 is a cheap high quality portrait lens on a D90 or a 50D (look at the 550D instead, better chip, better low light, excellent video mode, similar cost)

Its worth getting the kit lens and the 50mm f1.8, the kit lens is pretty versatile and will certainly get you going until you invest in something better. The 50mm is so inexpensive, and so well suited for portraiture on a cropped sensor camera, that it really is a no brainer.

So which is the best camera to buy? I obviously do not know anything about cameras but I want a camera that can take professional shots and professional close up shots. I remember when I got my braces that my dentist took some really close up shots of my teeth that turned out awesome. Can all these cameras do the same? I currently have an Olympus 1030 SW and I can’t take a close up shot without it getting blurred or the flash makes it too bright…but if I turn the flash off it blurrs the shot. My point being I don’t get the sharpness that I would like. I want a camera that takes really sharp pictures whether they be fast action, close-ups, portrait, bright light, etc….but I don’t get the quality of picture with the Olympus 1030 SW that I would like to have. Any suggestions?

Hey,

Don’t buy expensive cameras when you don’t know anything cheap ones. The XSI is great.

Here’s a post called ‘Buying A DSLR, what’s important, megapixels, features, brand, price, quality and which one to get. There are also Amazon links, here is the post – http://the-digital-photographer.blogspot.com/2009/03/which-dslr-to-buy.html

Good luck.

I made the decision to get a Nikon D90 (I was researching D700 but because I am relatively new the SLR family cameras I figured I should learn with the D90).
With lens, however, I have no idea what to look for.
The lens that comes with the camera is the 18-105mm.
But I will mostly be capturing scenery, architecture, family gatherings, things like that…
What would be a good lens for what I want to do??
There is this one package where the D90 comes with the 18-105mm and a 70-300mm.
I might as well ask about how to know what lens it right for me.
The larger the numbers mean the more it can zoom in and the less the number the more it zooms out correct??
Like I said in the beginning, I am beginning, but really want to learn and get better with the digital SLR camera. I think the D90 will be best for me. If you know of any other camera (Canon, Olympus, etc…) that might be better for me please let me know!!!

Take a look at your local library photography shelves. Look at the books covering the subject matter you will want to take pics of. Most books will list the lens focal length and speed & aperture used for each image. Get to know which type of image you are most likely to want to take and note the focal length used.

Generally for landscape you will find the standard lens [50mm] is about the best length. However, I have used from 24mm through to one exceptional rooftop sunset taken at 3x 210mm; equivalent to 620mm! So there really is no guarantee that you will prefer one length over the others.

The advantage of a zoom lens is that you can crop the image as you take it. Disadvantages are that zoom lenses generally need more light for a given speed setting and are often a little inferior to fixed length lenses, though that really depends on the quality of the various lenses.

My favourite landscape lens was a Canon 50mm f1.2. However, I tended to travel with a trusty Tamron 24-48 zoom as that allowed me to grab shots with tighter framing. My favourite shot was taken with a Vivitar 70-210. For woodland type treks I used the 70-210 as that allowed me to grab shots of animals at some distance. Every so often I’d spot a really nice landscape and shoot with the wider lenses.

Most of the subject matter you mention would be covered in the range 35 to 135 so I guess the 18 to 105 would be a good choice though I cannot comment on that actual lens.

With 50mm being standard the smaller number 18 represents a very wide angle and the 105 is often described a ‘portrait’ length as it is ideal for taking a portrait shot of someone’s face without background clutter.

As for the Canon vs Nikon argument… I prefer Canon for colour quality across the frame but the Nikkor lenses tend to be very punchy in the centre. So there is argument to support Canon for general work and Nikon for sports. In practice very few people can see the difference unless the pictures are set up specifically to reveal them.

So, I love taking photos, and I wanted a Digital SLR camera. all I’ve used are those silly digital cameras:
http://www.nikonusa.com/Assets/Digital-Camera/COOLPIX-S220/ColorVariants/26150-COOLPIX-S220/Views/353_26150_S220_front.jpg
But I want to move on to something like:
http://www.nikonusa.com/Find-Your-Nikon/Digital-SLR/index.page
But I’m completely new with this so I need your help.
>It needs to be inexpensive.
>I don’t really understand the whole way it works like "D700" not a clue what that means.
>It needs to be fairly simple to use.
> And What brand do you suggest. I personally think Nikon or Canon, cause I have some friends that are photographers, sorta and they usually talk about those brands.
So I need as much Information but in a way I can understand.
please and thank you!!
What are the lowest of the low prices, because even 400 is pretty high. anything lower?

First off, nowadays, most of the DSLR’s are really easy to use. I’ve had a Nikon D80 for a little under a year and absolutely love it.

I went around to local camera shops/stores and explained exactly what I was looking for and had conversations with the staff about the different cameras. Aside from this, I also did research on Nikon’s website.

As far as the "D700" vs. a "D80" (for example), Nikon’s website does a good job of explaining the differences. Each camera comes with different options and features and is therefore given a different title.

Basically what you need to do is deside what features do you need. Mine were:
1. 10+ megapixels (the amount of these affect the print quality)
2. Zoom (I had to buy a telephoto lens)
3. Had to allow me room to grow (although I’m not going professional, I do need it for school, so I need as many features available to me as possible).

I have a Fuji Finepix S9500 and im having a hard time changing the shutter speed or anything for that matter! i have turned the first dial closest to the left hand side of the camera to "S" (s stands for shutter) and then i have turned the second dial closest to the right hand side of the camera. i was told this is how to change the shutter speed and it seems to do nothing, nothing appears and the shutter speed is no different. i asked my dad for the info booklet that it come with and he is being rather annoying he keeps saying hes lost it. i am wanting to do equine (horse) photography and when a horse is moving at high speed i need a faster shutter speed. i do know what i am doing with cameras and the finepix s9500 is one of my two cameras i use. my other camera is a nikon d700 digital slr and even though i know its a different camera all together i have no problem doing anything on my nikon. also i have trouble making my finepix camera take multiple photos at one time. i have forgotten what its called but i followed what my dad told me to do and it doesn’t work. i have tried to figure it out myself and im getting no where at all. please help im dying to know if i am doing something wrong or if the camera has a fault.
thanks =]

The F2AS is the final evolution of arguably the best mechanical shutter camera ever made. Rock solid and totally reliable. It will work flawlessly in environments that will make modern DSLRs cry. It also maintains full forward compatibility to any F-mount lens to date with the exception of the PC-E Nikkors and G lenses.

for my birthday I am allowed to get "the camera of my dreams". I know what I want, but I’m not to sure what exactly I want. The price range needs to be nothing more than a little over $1,000.

I am looking for something like this

not something like this
http://www.nikonusa.com/Find-Your-Nikon/Product/Digital-Camera/26120/COOLPIX-S560.html
(no compact for me!)

I need to know soon so I can order and get it by my birthday. I am looking for the most professional looking images out of this camera so i can minor with it in college! and yes, it must be a Nikon.

thank you SOOO much!

A D90 would sit well into your budget if you are looking for an SLR.

It is part of the new generation of sensors, making the D80 (the other camera that would typically sit in your range) obsolete. The D200, which shares alot with the D80 would also be under $1000.

Keep in mind though that if you do pick up an SLR, youll need money for lenses so you can expand the range of pictures you can take. Given, you’ll be great with just a kit lens alone, but if you want the ability to put some serious zoom on, youll need to invest in a telephoto. On the flip side, if you want a really wide angle of view, expect to pay a small fortune.

If this doesnt sound like something you can fit into your budget, try for a SLR-like camera/super zoom.

Best of luck to you, glad to hear you want to stick with Nikon =)
